Austrian Gold Ducats: The Little Coin With Big Profit Potential

Austrian Gold Ducats: The Little Coin With Big Profit Potential

Article by Dr. Emily Kensington

Austrian Gold Ducats are gold coins that were first minted in Vienna, Austria from 1908 through 1914. They feature an image of Emperor Franz Joseph on one side and a two-headed eagle and Austrian Coat of Arms on the other side.

After the emperor’s death in 1916, the coin was restruck in tribute and the Vienna Mint still makes them today with the date of 1915. Austrian Ducats, both originals and restrikes, are made from 98% pure gold and their small size and affordable price make them an excellent way for new gold investors to start a profitable coin collection.

Ducat coins date back much farther than the Austrian/Hungarian version, however. Original Ducats are thought to originate in Sicily around 1140. They were widely used in Venice and Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages all the way through the Renaissance Period. Various European government mints issued their own Ducats and they were the world’s most popular gold coin and a popular unit of currency until World War 1.

WHY COLLECT DUCATS?

Owning original Ducats literally means owning a piece of history. In addition, their low price makes them affordable to everyone. Because they are less expensive than other gold coins, they are a great investment for both new and veteran coin collectors and gold investors.

Of course, the potential return on investment is the main reason to own physical gold. The price of gold has been hitting new record highs for the past ten years and has yet to slow down. The reason is that many view gold as a safe asset to offset the effects of rising inflation. Investors also value gold as a safeguard against the steadily declining value of the US dollar and other paper currencies.

WHERE TO FIND DUCATS

For the sake of convenience, nothing beats ordering from reputable online dealers such as APMEX which make ordering quick and painless. While eBay and other auction sites are generally far riskier, they can be useful if you know the seller/dealer personally or the seller has a ton of positive feedback.
