Does the 1799 Silver Dollar have writing on its side?
I have received this coin a few years ago from my grandpa. I know that there are several counterfeit coins just like this one, and I would love to verify that there is writing on the side of this coin. The one I have states "One Dollar Or Unit Hundred Cents." This coin seems pretty legit to me, but I have not been able to find out what is on the side.
Thank You!

yes the silver dollars from 1794-1804 have a lettered edge not a reeded one. I have seen a lot of the fakes that have the reeded edge. The people making them have never seen the real coin only newer coins that have reeding. It does not make your coin real though for I have seen them done right. You need to look for small dots that are raised and the legends of the coin, check the letters, they should be sharp and not mushy. The coin should also weigh 26.96 grams or very close to it. Why the 1799 date has been picked for most fake bust dollars are beyound me for the coin is not that rare. The 1804 is but most of them are well known by the collecting community. Hope this helps some but taking it to a couple of coin dealers may help. Go to more than one for their opinions. Hope this helps but the coin really needs to be seen by someone that knows coins.
