Is starting a coin collection expensive?
I love traveling, but money is very tight. Coins that are shipped to America from other countries is totally awesome. I was thinking of starting a collection of different coins from around the world! I just need some help.
-Is a coin collection something for a girl like me? (Im 13)
-I looked on eBay and they have like 4 Canadian pennies for {content}.99, plus .99 shipping and handling, is that cheap?
-Would some of the coins get really expensive if I keep them for awhile and sell them in life?
I have thought about my other interests; Filmaking (Sp?) but the cameras are waaaaay to expensive.
Writing; I am currently writing stories for WattPadd.
Reading; I read everyday.
If you have any suggestions of some cheap collections that I can start, please offer!
Thanks, Brianne!

I wouldnt always trust eBay, I feel the best is a coin shop or antique store. I have a coin collection myself and it is very neat. My oldest coin is a penny from 1866! It can be fun to find things that happened around that date. Wonder what people would buy with the coin. Collecting doesn’t have to be expensive. Sure there are some that are hundreds of dollars, but I bought that penny for about five dollars. If your looking for cheap foreign money, Im not the best to ask, i dont collect foregn money much, but a coin store would be helpful. They dont just sell american coins. They sell all kinds of money. I believe you can buy some chinese or Japanese bills for about a dollar. I have like five singapore dollars that i got for really cheap, you could check out those. You should try out coin collecting you might like it!
hello friend im a coin collector too(: Yes for any age, and no you can buy coins cheap, i woundn’t buy coins on eBay cause alot of them are fake, so you should buy them at the coins shop, they have nearly any coins & banknotes there, like canadian large cent’s their are cheap & that a great way to start your collection! (: & you might find some world coins in your changes or your piggy bank. I started collect coins like 3 years ago when i was 12 its fun! My oldest coin in my collection is a "english sixpence 1580" from england I buy it around $30.00. At the coin shop you can buy world coins for .25 cent each! hope this help have a nice day! (:
Sure, coin collecting can be done by anyone-my dad got me started when I was about 7. And girls can do it as well as boys can.
There are a couple of places you can get foreign coins. The first is to ask your family members if they have any they’d like to give you. Sometimes people will save up some coins from a trip, and then as the years go buy, they decide they’re not really the kind of souvenirs they’d like to keep.
The other place is at a local coin store. Most have a box of miscellaneous foreign coins that aren’t worth enough to justify putting them in holders and then finding a way to store them, so they get put in what’s commonly called a "junk box". I’d do that first, and then when you figure out exactly what you want to collect, you can move into the more expensive stuff.
Probably every collector has some coins that really don’t fit in with their collections, but they saw it and said "Oh, Pretty!" and bought it. Most collectors end up focusing on collecting coins that have a particular interest to them. I’ve taken quite a few trips to Canada and the UK, and really enjoyed myself there, so that’s what I collect. Some people specialize in coins with birds, or kinds of transportation, or ships. It’s really up to what interests you.
Anytime you see something on ebay (or any other website), don’t just look at the price-look at the price plus shipping, and treat that like that’s actually what you’re paying for the coins. Common Canadian cents for $.25 each isn’t too terribly bad (especially if you’re not close enough to the Canadian border that you get them in change). When you add in the shipping, you’re actually paying $1 each, which is way too much for common Canadian cents .
Could the coins you collect become valuable? Sure, but to be honest, the coins that are probably going to appreciate in value the most are already not cheap. If a coin is worth $.25 right now, it’s because there are plenty to go around to satisfy the number of people who collect them. Unless there’s a huge change in the number of collectors, there are probably going to be enough to satisfy demand for the near future, so the price isn’t likely to go up much.
Especially since you’re just starting out, don’t worry about what a coin might be worth in the future. Just enjoy having them in your collection, and if it turns out they’ve gone up when you go to sell them, that’s a bonus.
The last thing I’ll tell you is to never try to clean a coin. Cleaning almost always damages the surface, and end up hurting the value.
As was stated most coin dealers have world coin boxes and sell the coins for around .25 each and cheaper if you buy more. A lot of people collect one coin per country and that can be fun as well as a challenge. A world coin collection like that rarely goes up in value but one learns about the world they live in. As for eBay one has to be careful there. Shipping charges can cause the coins you buy to be to expensive. You would never get your money back when selling. The people I find that make money in coins are the very rich who can buy the rare coins and collectors that do their home work and know more about the coins they collect than the coin dealers. These people can spot the rare varieties and buy them at common prices, when the dealer did not do their home work. I collect coins that have value but pay for them, some are an investment others I need for a set or it is historic. Then there are coins for fun that have little value but are fun to collect such as Chinese cash coins, there the book to look them up is more expensive than the coins. One will never get rich with them or ancient bronze Roman coins in grades of fine and below but they are historic and fun to collect. Also when it comes to world coins some collectors pick a theme such as birds, fish, boats, trains, dragons or other things that they like. If one never makes a dime on their collection they can be proud that they put in the time and did something others did not. It is also fun to show some one a coin that some ancient Chinese Emperor actually drew the characters for it. They also look strange and cool. have fun
Try collecting used stamps. They can be bought inexpensively at Hobby stores. Friends can save them for you. You can even post on line (maybe Craigs list or Free Cycle) and ask if they will send them to you from all around the world or even have collections they no longer want. If you know business people that could save stamps for you that would be great too. Coins can be very expensive. You might start looking through your change and try to get coins in all worth for as many different years as you can. Save them in the coin albums and maybe someone in your descendants will have something worth lots of money..
