Calli has a pocket full of quarters. Calli saves all of the NH state coins which are one-third of the total quarters. Calli spends half of the remaining coins on pizza. Calli then puts two RI, two NJ, one MI, and one VT state coin in the soda machine. The last quarter was a Canadian quarter and she dropped it down a wishing well. How many quarters did Calli start with?

You can solve this by working backward.
2 RI + 2 NJ + 1 MI + 1 VT + 1 Canadian = 7 quarters.
If she was left with 7 quarters after spending half, she had 14 before.
If she was left with 14, after putting aside 1/3 of the quarters, she would have started with 42.
Let the starting number of quarters be x.
Next put values of x to form a quadratic equation and find the value of x.

Calli started with 21 quarters-
NH= 1/3 total coins
(what is left is 2/3- in which half of that is spent for pizza)
Pizza=1/3 total coins
(add up the remaining quarters)
7=1/3 total coins
because 7 is 1/3, just multiply 7 by 3 and that is how many quarters she started with!
