Freeriding is a discipline of mountain biking closely related to downhill biking and dirt jumping but focused on tricks, style, and technical trail features. It is now recognized as one of the most popular disciplines within mountain biking. The term freeriding was coined by snowboarders but has a slightly different meaning in mountain biking than in boarding. In mountain biking, freeriding means that the rider attempts the most creative line for style, amplitude, control and speed.
In 2010, there were more than 20,000 spectators lining the Monster Energy Slopestyle event and numerous media to document it.
If you’re interested in more than watching the mountain biking events, Whistler is infamous for its superior downhill trails. There’s everything from beginner to epic trails. Most notably, the International Mountain Bicycling Association has labeled only 43 trails in the world as epic trails and one of those is Whistler’s legendary Comorftably Numb trail. This long and challenging singletrack ride was designed by Chris Markle who is Whistler’s trail-building legend) and is a must-do ride for technically advanced cyclists. The trail offers long climbs, challenging rock faces, elevated bridges and spectacular views.
